Article summary

Actively trigger the positioning process in the app to find your position.

Tap the blue button at the bottom of the navigation menu. The device will go into Guided Picture Taking (GPT) mode. This feature will help you provide the best pictures for Visual Positioning.

The screen shows the camera feed from your smart device's main camera.

Note: The app needs permission to access the camera from your operating system. If that permission has not yet been granted, a dialogue will request you do so. If permission to the camera is not granted, Visual Positioning will not work.

Note: Visual Positioning uses GPS information to increase its performance. That's why the app will need permission to access the device's location from your operating system. If that permission has not yet been granted, a dialogue will request you do so. If permission to the camera is not granted, Visual Positioning will not work.

Note: The exact flow of how to set these permissions depends on your smart device's manufacturer and setup.

Your device will first attempt to establish an Augmented Reality Session. A white overlay will prompt you to move the camera around. Once the session is established (after about 3 seconds), the app will guide you to take pictures of your surroundings.

The screen will show the following content:

  • The background is occupied by a video stream from the phone's camera.

  • Tap the x button to close the picture-taking process and return to the previous screen.

  • The white circle in the center of the screen is the crosshairs.

  • Above (or beneath) the crosshairs, another white circle represents the target. It will always be placed on the horizontal plane of the real world.

Step 1: the First Target

In order to initiate the process, physically move/rotate the mobile device upwards (or downwards) until the crosshairs overlap with the target.

Three things can happen:

  1. An animation will tell you that you were successful. The camera view closes and the app returns to the previous screen. Proceed to the section Tracking.

  2. The crosshairs stay in place, but the target in its center vanishes and is replaced by two targets to the left and right. In this case, the system needs additional images to determine your position. Proceed with Step 2.

  3. An alert will show informing you that Visual Positioning is not available. Please contact your Site administrator if you are sure this feature should work on your instance.

Step 2: Subsequent Targets

In order to proceed, physically turn your phone to the left or right to find the next Target, while keeping it aimed vertically on the horizon. The direction in which you rotate the phone should be determined by your surroundings.

Note: Always target areas with as much visual information and the least white walls as possible.

Overlay the crosshairs with the Target.

Repeat Step 2.

  3. (After the 4th picture) An alert will show up, informing you that no position can be retrieved. In this case, the visual information around could not be matched to a one-to-one position in your site. Move away until your surroundings change and try again.

Note: For best results during this process:

  • Place yourself in a well-lit area.

  • Move the camera around slowly.

  • Point the camera at the room and not at walls.

Note: NavVis does not store any pictures taken with your phone. Any image is processed by the Visual Positioning System and then permanently discarded.
