Laser Scanner Field of View
The field of view is the area detected by the Laser Scanner of the device.
Note: Objects in the field of view will appear in the data collected by the device. Try to keep your hands, arms, clothing, helmets, backpacks, and other objects out of the field of view while scanning.
Obstacles
Advice on navigating obstacles while scanning with the device.
Scanning through Doorways
When entering through doors while scanning, areas before and after must be scanned completely without blocking the field of view of the scanner. The method of moving through doors is shown below. While moving through the door take note of the following:
Take care when moving through the door, make sure no one is on the other side of the door.
Do not damage the device as you move.
Move slowly and carefully.
Do not trigger panoramic images.
Monitor the SLAM Status Bar on the Scanner Screen as you move.
Before entering the door, make sure the area around the door is scanned.
If the door is not already open, turn sideways to open the door, holding the device with your other hand.
Wedge the door open.
4. With the door open and not moving, enter through the door backwards.
Note: Avoid scanning a moving door as this will affect accuracy.
As you go through the door, turn and scan the area as you move through it.
Turn into the space as you go through the door.
Once inside the room scan the area using a sweeping movement, left to right.
Elevators
Do not use elevators while scanning with the device. The vertical movement will not be detected. Use the stairs when scanning multiple floors. If there are no stairs start a new dataset on every floor.
Stairs
Warning: Watch your step and use the handrail.
Using the device decreases your ability to see the stairs in front of you. To ensure your safety you should always hold the handrail.
If you trigger the cameras while holding the handrail, your hand and arm could be visible in the resulting panoramic image.
Panoramic Images
The photos taken by the four cameras on the device are combined during processing (In NavVis IVION) into 360° panoramic images. These are used to color the point cloud and provide a realistic walk-through experience in the digital twin.
Panoramic images should be taken regularly while scanning and at all Points of Interest. For good point cloud coloring, we recommend taking panoramic images at least once a meter in complicated or cluttered environments. In more open spaces take a panoramic image every three meters is sufficient, make sure you take panoramic images in different directions to fully capture everything in the room and for fully colored point cloud.
You will hear a shutter sound when the cameras have been triggered.
An indicator will display on the Scanning Screen marking the location.
360° Control Point Marker on the Scanning Screen.
270° Control Point Marker on the Scanning Screen (showing the direction of where the camera was pointing when the panorama was triggered).
Note: Remain completely still while taking a panoramic image. In a low light environment, stay still for two seconds, refer to scanning in dark areas like a basement.
Refer to Changing and Triggering Cameras for information on the settings available.
