How to turn off WiFi and Bluetooth Scanning

Prev Next

Introduction

Purpose

If you have security restrictions that do not allow you to scan with WiFi and Bluetooth in a certain site, follow this procedure to disable WiFi and Bluetooth scanning. The next time you start your NavVis VLX, WiFi and Bluetooth will remain disabled by default.

Scope

This solution applies to all scanning devices’ UI versions running on Ubuntu 18.04

Procedure

Minimize the UI

1 Go to Settings

When you start your NavVis VLX, the first thing you see is the Main NavVis VLX UI. Click on the Settings Gear Icon to open the settings menu

2 Exit the Application

Scroll down and click the Advanced drop-down option and select Exit Application.  This will exit the UI and open the Ubuntu OS.

Disabling WiFi Scanning

1 Go to WiFi Settings

Once you have minimized the NavVis UI, you will be shown the Ubuntu OS. In the Ubuntu menu bar on top of the screen, enter the WiFi settings on the top right.

2 Turn off WiFi

Click Turn Off and go back into the NavVis UI.

If you start mapping now, NavVis software will run as usual, but will not be able to access WiFi. In the final dataset, the WiFi logs will be in the folder /datasets_rec/<dataset_id>/wifi, but they will all have a size of 0kb and be empty when opened.

Note: This setting is permanently saved between restarts, so you have to actively turn on WiFi when you want to scan with WiFi again, run updates on the trolley, or connect with a NavVis Solution Engineer in a remote session.

Disabling Bluetooth Scanning

1 Exit the UI

Minimize the NavVis Mapping UI (or exit and restart later).

2 Enter the Bluetooth Settings

Once you have minimized the NavVis UI, you will be shown the Ubuntu OS. In the Ubuntu menu bar on top of the screen, enter the Bluetooth settings on the top right.

3 Turn on the Bluetooth

Just like the WiFi setting, this setting is permanently saved between restarts, so you have to actively turn the Bluetooth on again.
