Troubleshooting Procedure for Point Cloud Cleanup

Prev Next

Introduction

Use this troublshooting procedure if you encounter an error while using the Point Cloud Cleanup tool, for example the following:

“Cleanup operation failed – Try running the operation again, if the error persists contact support.”

Procedure

1. Retry the Cleanup Operation

  1. Re‑open the Point Cloud Cleanup tool.

  2. Re‑run the same cleanup operation on the affected dataset.

  3. Wait until the operation completes or fails again and note:

    • The exact error message

    • The time of the failure

    • The dataset / project name

If the operation succeeds on retry, no further action is required.

2. Revert Recent Cleanup Changes

If you recently edited the point cloud before the error appeared:

  1. Open the Point Cloud Cleanup tool.

  2. Use Undo to revert the last operation(s) step by step.

  3. Alternatively, use the Trash (Delete) button to remove problematic cleanup elements (e.g., regions, selections, or tools you just applied).

  4. After reverting, try the cleanup operation again.

This can help if a specific previous edit is causing the failure.

3. Check Dataset and Workspace

  1. Confirm that the point cloud is fully available and not corrupted:

    • Verify the point cloud loads correctly in the viewer.

    • Check if other tools can use the same dataset without errors, such as Mark and Measure.

    • Check the integrity of the point cloud.

  2. If possible, test the same cleanup operation on:

    • Another point cloud in the same project.

    • A copy of the affected point cloud.

  3. If the error only appears on one dataset, note the dataset name and size.

4. Try a Simpler Cleanup Configuration

  1. Reduce the scope of the cleanup:

    • Use a smaller selection area.

    • Disable optional filters / tools if configurable.

  2. Run the cleanup on this smaller selection.

  3. If this works, gradually increase the selection size or re‑enable options to identify what triggers the failure.

5. Collect Information for Support

If the error persists after the steps above, prepare the following before contacting support:

  • Exact error message text (and screenshot, if possible)

  • Date and time of the last failed attempt

  • Project name and point cloud name

  • Description of what you were trying to do:

    • Cleanup tool(s) used

    • Approximate selection size / area

  • Whether the issue is reproducible on:

    • Other point clouds

    • Other projects

  • Any recent changes:

    • Importing or updating point clouds

    • Software updates

6. Contact Support

Contact NavVis Support and include the information from step 5.

  • Describe the problem and mention any error messages you received, for example:
“Cleanup operation failed – Try running the operation again, if the error persists contact support.”

  • Attach screenshots and logs if requested by support.
