Troubleshooting Poor Processing Results Double Walls, Tilted Outlines, and Duplicated Structures

Prev Next

NavVis devices use an algorithm called Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). This technology enables the device to map environments while simultaneously determining its location within them. You can learn more about SLAM and how it impacts scan accuracy here:

In complex or challenging environments, SLAM may encounter drift or tracking failures. These issues arise when the algorithm struggles to correctly match visual and spatial data—often due to environments that lack distinct features or contain excessive noise from moving objects. It’s important to note that in such cases, control points cannot prevent SLAM-related issues.

Typical signs of SLAM drift or failure after processing include:

  • A jumping or inconsistent trajectory.

  • Duplicated structures, such as overlapping buildings or walls.

  • Tilted building outlines or skewed geometry.

If you suspect that your dataset has been affected by poor processing results, please share the following information with NavVis Support to assist with troubleshooting:

  • Processing Task Details: Share the processing task details for the failed task as outlined in this guide: https://knowledge.navvis.com/docs/downloading-data-processing-task-details

  • Upload the raw dataset (rec) folder
provide the datasets_rec folder from the SSD for the problematic dataset. Please zip the entire folder first before uploading it via the link that will be provided by NavVis Support

  • Access to Your IVION Instance
It would also be helpful if you could set up a user for your IVION instance. This allows NavVis Support to fetch all the necessary information (e.g., processing settings) and upload the results directly to your IVION instance for comparison. Please use "support@navvis.com" as the user email. Detailed instructions can be found here: https://knowledge.navvis.com/docs/creating-a-temporary-navvis-support-admin-user-and-sharing

  • Control points file
If applicable, please also include the control points file used in this processing. Don’t forget to specify the EPSG system which was used

In many cases, NavVis Support can reprocess the data and improve the results.
