What are Points of Interest (POIs)

Prev Next

Points of Interest (POIs) are significant 3D locations used to mark, navigate, and analyze spaces. Indoors, they identify key spots like doors, sensors, or equipment for navigation, facility management, and smart building systems. Outdoors, they represent landmarks, infrastructure, or terrain features for mapping, surveying, planning, and environmental monitoring.

Indoor POIs make buildings navigable and manageable, while outdoor POIs anchor our understanding of cities and landscapes. There are many and varied examples of POIs but here are just a few:

  • Power outlets: For asset mapping for facilities.

  • Fire extinguisher: Safety POI for indoor navigation.

  • Emergency exit sign: Safety-critical marker.

  • Smoke detector: Maintenance and safety mapping.

  • Mark hazards, construction zones, or restricted areas.

  • Mark landmarks (statues, towers, bridges, monuments) for reference.

How are POIs structured in NavVis IVION?

All POIs in NavVis IVION possess a type, type group, and location. You can also define their name, description, icon, significance, and additional attributes. The names and descriptions of POIs can be configured in one or multiple languages. The content of a POI description can range from simple text to embedded iframes. Incorporating custom data into POIs is beneficial for connecting with applications developed on the NavVis IVION platform.

POI Types and Type Groups

POI types and POI type groups organize the POIs in a site:

  • Each POI is part of one POI type.

  • Each POI type is part of one POI type group.

Three sections displaying content with highlighted areas for emphasis and organization.

When a new site is created, default types of points of interest, like "Stairs" or "Parking," along with groups of POI types, such as "Access" or "Transport," are also created. Only a site administrator can add, delete, or edit types

In a site, the POI Types menu contains all POI types and type groups in the site. From this menu, you can edit POI types and type groups, and filter which POI types to display.
