Preparing for the Airport

Prev Next

The are two methods to travel through an airport with the NavVis VLX:

  • Travelling with the Shipping Case.

  • Travelling with the Backpack Accessory.

Most airlines classify the NavVis VLX as oversized baggage. You must book this with your airline before flying, and there may be an extra charge.

Travelling with the Shipping Case

Travelling through an airport with the Shipping Case is the most secure way of travelling with the device as it is very robust.

When travelling with the Shipping Case you must remove the Li-Ion batteries, refer below.

Travelling with the Backpack Accessory

Travelling with the Backpack Accessory through an airport is extremely easy.

Caution: When travelling through an airport with just the Backpack Accessory, it must always accompany you in the aircraft cabin and should never be checked into the cargo hold.

You can carry the Li-Ion Batteries in the Backpack but there are special conditions, refer below.

Battery Preparation Before Flying

Travelling through an airport with batteries is highly regulated, to avoid delays and breaching compliancy regulations read the following. Before you fly, it is best to check with the airline you are travelling with as each airline has their own rules and regulations. However, the following are standard guidelines:

  • The NavVis Li-Ion Batteries must be taken on the plane as hand luggage. Put each of the Li-Ion Batteries into the protective foam of the Backpack Accessory. If you are not travelling with the Backpack, cover the battery connectors with electrical tape to prevent short-circuits, or put each battery into a separate plastic bag.

  • There is currently no specific requirement from airlines to drain the batteries of charge before flying.

  • The airline may require you to carry the battery material safety data sheet:  Click here for the Material Safety Data Sheet.

  • Check the maximum watt hours per battery allowed as cabin baggage by your airline. Normally, batteries with less than 100 Wh can be carried without prior approval. This information is also useful when passing security.
