Article summary

The Point cloud quality and the placement of capture locations impact the final panorama image quality. In narrow environments, choose capture locations carefully to capture all areas of the floor.

For the NavVis M6, scanning small and narrow rooms can be challenging. A good strategy is important for achieving a good point cloud and panorama image quality, especially when it comes to filling in the cameras' blind spot on the floor. This section covers how to choose capture locations so that all areas of the images can be restored.

Note: In very small spaces, or if the building has narrow doors, you can adapt the wheel unit of the mobile mapping system: detach the rear wheels and re-mount them on the inside of the wheel unit. Consult the product manual for how to do this. Warning: the device is less stable in this setup. Only use it for special cases.

When Using an Operator Mask

An operator mask is an image mask applied to panorama images by default. It is designed to cover the operator's shoulders, which can appear in the camera images if the person is tall enough.

The drawback is that the mask extends the blind spot of the cameras, meaning the area covered by it also needs to be filled in during the floor-filling process. That is why capture locations need to be chosen carefully in small and narrow rooms.

Because the operator mask extends the blind spot at the back, we recommend that adjacent capture locations face each other. Keep a distance of at least one meter between the capture locations. Keep a larger distance if they are not facing each other.

Note: Users can create a custom operator mask for data captured with the NavVis M6. Using a custom operator mask changes the minimum distances needed between capture locations.

Without an Operator Mask

When an operator mask is not used for post-processing, the area that needs to be filled in is smaller.

Then, when scanning small rooms, the orientation of the capture locations to each other does not matter. Only a minimum distance of one meter is required to restore all image information.

Note: Without an operator mask, the operator is much more likely to show up in the panorama images. Run some tests to find out the right position for the operator.
