Crop and Download Feature Fails with Not Enough RAM

Issue description

The Crop and Download feature is failing with the message not enough RAM.

The Crop and Download tool can fail if you try to crop and download large buildings or whole sites. As the feature was not built to deal with such use cases it might fail. Below you'll find possible workarounds.

Troubleshooting procedure

The Crop and Download feature we provide was developed to download smaller portions (e. g. single rooms or sections) of a site. Cropping the complete site with the intention to export all aligned datasets in one single point cloud unfortunately exceeds the intended usage.

Try one of the following workarounds:

  • Select only relevant datasets when performing crop & download, you can do so on the right side when using the Crop & Download feature. This means deselecting all datasets which are not part of the cropped area and are not necessary in the output file.

  • Another solution would be to crop and download the single datasets one by one. As the datasets do not need to be merged during this process you're not exceeding the RAM that's available for your instance (currently 128GB of RAM are available for this job). Make sure to crop the whole site and then only select one single dataset on the side menu on the right (it will be highlighted as blue). Now select one reference dataset below and perform this procedure for all other datasets while always selecting the same reference dataset as chosen prior. This will make sure that all downloaded point clouds will have the same reference point and will be aligned to it. You may then import those point clouds into any third party tool (e. g. Cloud Compare) and merge the different point clouds into one.
