Finishing the Dataset

  1. Tap Finish to finalize the mapping session and create a new dataset.

    VLX_Stop_Mapping

  2. Confirm by tapping Yes. A preview of the dataset is shown. The mapping process shuts down, the images are downloaded, the dashboard closes, and the user returns to the main screen.

A yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark  Description automatically generated Caution: Do not shut down your device until this step is complete. It could lead to the corruption of the data.

Previewing Datasets

  1. From the main screen, select Datasets.

    VLX_User_Interface

  2. From the completed Datasets screen, select a dataset to preview.

    Preview_dataset1

  3. Each saved dataset displays the following information:

    • 2D map preview.

    • Size of the area mapped.

    • Dataset ID.

    • Starting time of the scanning.

    • Duration of the scanning.

    • Number of captured panoramas.

    • Number of captured control points.

    Preview_dataset2

  4. Tap on the magnifying glass icon and the Quality Map Review screen will display.

    • Tap the X to close the review screen.

    • Tap the plus or minus icons to zoom in and out.

    • As you zoom in you can also pan and look around.

To process the dataset, either upload them to NavVis IVION Processing, or if using NavVis Desktop Processing, transfer them to your processing machine and proceed there.

Switching off

  1. Switch off the NavVis VLX

Press the power On/Off button on the side of the NavVis VLX.

Data Processing with NavVis IVION

The raw data from the NavVis VLX must be processed to generate a Point cloud and panoramic images.

Data processing prepares your data for use in NavVis IVION, and other CAD or BIM software. You can process in the cloud using NavVis IVION to generate the point cloud and panoramic images. Surveyed control points will correct distortions in the point cloud.

During processing you can adjust the settings of the point cloud output, including:

  • Point cloud resolution

  • Point cloud file format

  • Point cloud filtering mode

  • Point cloud coloring

  • Maximum laser scanner range

FAQ

How do I finalize the mapping session and create a new dataset?

Tap Finish to finalize the mapping session and create a new dataset.

What should I do after tapping Finish?

Confirm by tapping Yes. A preview of the dataset will be shown, and the mapping process will shut down.

Is it safe to shut down my device during the dataset finalization?

No, do not shut down your device until the finalization step is complete to avoid data corruption.

How can I preview my completed datasets?

From the main screen, select Datasets, then choose a dataset from the completed Datasets screen to preview.

What information is displayed for each saved dataset?

Each saved dataset displays a 2D map preview, size of the area mapped, dataset ID, starting time, duration of scanning, number of captured panoramas, and number of captured control points.

How do I view the panoramas in a dataset?

Select Image previews to view the panoramas, which will display information about their dataset ID, time, and date.

Can I delete panoramas from a dataset?

Yes, you can delete panoramas by selecting the delete icon.

What is required to process the dataset?

You can either upload the datasets to NavVis IVION Processing or transfer them to your processing machine if using NavVis Desktop Processing.

What settings can I adjust during data processing with NavVis IVION?

You can adjust point cloud resolution, file format, filtering mode, coloring, and maximum laser scanner range.

Where can I find detailed instructions for data processing?

For detailed data processing instructions using NavVis IVION, visit the Processing Data section.

How large is the data produced by NavVis VLX? How much data do I need to store?

  • For NavVis VLX 1 and NavVis VLX 2 typically approx. 20 GB/hour (~300 panoramas/hour) but can also be up to 40 GB/hour (900 panoramas/hour).

  • Due to the higher point rate of the NavVis VLX 3 the raw data size might be roughly doubled in comparison to previous NavVis VLX generations.

  • NavVis VLX 3 typically generates approx. 30 GB/hour with about 5 panoramas per minute. Creating about 15 panos per minute may end up with an amount of 50 GB/hour. Due to the better intensity mapping of for some applications the grey scale contrast displayed point cloud might be sufficient.

  • The size of the processed data is approx. 1.8x recording size for all VLX systems. We assume a slightly higher factor caused by longer range and higher completeness over range.

Can I use NavVis VLX data for BIM modelling?

Yes, NavVis point clouds are being used for BIM modelling by our partners successfully. Usually LOD200 and up to LOD300 are applied, depending on project specific requirements. It might make sense to use a TLS as complementary device, when:

  • There areas with accuracy requirements below 5mm.

  • Fine structures such as sprinklers need to be modelled and can only be scanned from a larger distance.
