Types of Log Files

There are two types of log files:

  • Dataset-specific log files

  • Global (dataset-independent) log files

Dataset-Specific Log Files

These contain all the information messages from the scan, processing, and image stitching. The log files are stored under logs in every dataset, e.g. /path/to/project/datasets_rec/2015-04-28_15.55.23/logs/.

For most support tasks, the relevant log files are:

datasets_rec/<dataset-name>/logs/mapping.log

System software log capturing all log messages during a specific dataset from start to finish.

datasets_rec/<dataset-name>/logs/kern.log*.gz

Kernel log of the underlying operating system.

datasets_rec/<dataset-name>/logs/syslog*.gz

System log of the underlying operating system.

datasets_rec/<dataset-name>/logs/*_NavVis.log.gz

System software log capturing all log messages in a day upon powering the device on.

Global Log Files

Global log files are independent of any dataset. These logs contain all the application status messages while the device is turned on.

Downloading Global Log Files:

  1. Turn on the NavVis VLX.

  2. Click the icon to open the help menu.

  3. Click Save Logs and select where the log files will be saved on your machine. The easiest option is to select the drive called data, which is the external SSD connected to the NavVis VLX.

  4. Click Save.

  5. Turn off the NavVis VLX and disconnect the external SSD from the device.

  6. Connect the SSD to a computer using one of the provided cables and copy the files from the drive to the computer.

  7. Send the log files to the support engineer by email.
