# Naming Datasets

Assign meaningful names to your Datasets to help you identify them and determine which dataset contains which scanned area. NavVis IVION uses the dataset names as labels in the datasets list.

## Procedure

1. Tap **Start Mapping** to start a new dataset.
2. The system prompts the user to enter a name for the dataset before proceeding to the calibration steps.

3. Users can choose between inputting a custom name in the **Custom Dataset Name** field, reusing a recently used name in the **Most Recently Used** field, or using **ASSISTED NAMING** to enter a dataset name that follows the NavVis naming conventions.

## Naming Conventions

Consistent naming makes it easier to manage and post-process datasets. We recommend the following naming convention:

- "Company_Building_Floor.Room.DatasetNumber" *Example: TUM_Reaktorhalle_01.03*
- In case a part of a Site needs to be re-mapped, add a sequential number for each attempt to the end of the dataset name. *Example: TUM_Reaktorhalle_1.03_1*

> [!NOTE]
> **Note:**The dataset name does not need to be unique since a dataset is always identified by the date and time of its creation. However, we recommend following the NavVis dataset naming convention.

| Part of dataset name | Explanation |
| --- | --- |
| Company | Name of the company/institution that owns or uses the building |
| Building | Building type or name |
| Floor | Floor number (two digits) |
| Room | Room number (two digits) |
| Dataset number | Number assigned to the dataset on the respective floor. Start at 01 (two digits) |
| Try number | Number of attempts. Start at 01 (two digits) |

## Valid Dataset Characters

This is a short list of characters that are accepted by the system when naming datasets.

| Dataset Name Valid Characters | Character Definition |
| --- | --- |
| A-Z | Capital letters A to Z |
| a-z | Lowercase letters a to z |
| 0-9 | Numbers 0 to 9 |
| - | Minus sign |
| + | Plus sign |
| _ | Underscore |
| space | Space |
| . | Period |
| ' | Apostrophe |
| () | Round brackets |
| , | Comma |

A dataset is a piece of a site, the result of a continuous recording with a NavVis mapping device or the result of an imported point cloud. Datasets can contain panoramic images and point clouds.

Site refers to a complex of one or more buildings displayed in a NavVis IVION instance. For example, the Munich Airport would be one site. An instance can contain multiple sites. Each site consists of one or more datasets.
