# What specifications does a desktop computer need for desktop processing?

The recommended hardware set-up for an on-premise workstation to process NavVis datasets are:

| Hardware | Requirements |
| --- | --- |
| RAM | - NavVis VLX 1 and 2 datasets: 128 GB - NavVis VLX 3 datasets: 192 GB - NavVis MLX datasets: 128 GB |
| CPU | - A minimum of 8 physical cores (16 threads) is required. - Single-core clock speed highly affects the processing performance. Choose a CPU that has a higher clock speed. - NavVis desktop processing software currently only supports x86_64 architecture. |
| Storage | - It is recommended to separate the operating system disk space from the storage disk. For instance, you can allocate a 500GB physical disk/partition for installing Ubuntu 22.04, while opting for a multi-terabyte disk or a Network Attached Storage (NAS) to store and process NavVis datasets. - Some guidelines on how much disk space NavVis datasets occupy: - Recorded data: As a guide, expect to generate between 15-34 GB/hour (250-900 panoramas/hour) of recorded data. - Processed data: Processed data should be 1.5 to 2 times the recorded data size. The data volume depends on a variety of factors including the scan duration, the point cloud resolution settings, and the number of images captured by the operator. - Intermediate results: During processing, at least 100 GB of additional free disk space is needed for intermediate and temporary results. |
| GPU | - NavVis desktop processing is not graphically intensive. - A dedicated GPU is not required for a processing workstation. - Integrated graphics is more than sufficient and often advised. |

>
> - An internet connection is required to install NavVis desktop processing.
> - Access to the NavVis repository ([Sonatype Nexus Repository](https://repo2.navvis.com/)) is required. Please ensure that the NavVis repository is whitelisted within your IT infrastructure.
