# Creating a New Dataset

1. Tap **New Dataset** on the screen.

2. Enter a name for the dataset. When naming a dataset, you can either:

  - Enter a custom name into the **Custom name** field. Refer to [Tips on Naming Datasets](/v1/docs/naming-datasets-1).
  - Tap **Naming Assistant** to enter a dataset name generated by the device.
3. Once there is a name for the dataset, tap **Next**.

Note: Tap outside of the naming field to remove the keyboard from the screen.

1. The following screen is displayed. To begin scanning tap **Start mapping**.

**H**ow do I create a new dataset on the NavVis MLX?****

On the Home Screen, **tap "New Dataset"** to begin the process of creating a new scan session.

****How do I name a dataset?****

- **Custom Name** – Type in a name manually using the on-screen keyboard.
- **Naming Assistant** – Tap this to let the device suggest a name for you.

****How do I remove the keyboard after typing a name?****

Simply **tap outside of the naming field** on the screen to dismiss the keyboard.

****What happens after I name the dataset?****

Once a name is entered, tap **Next** to proceed to the next screen.

****Can I rename the dataset later?****

Dataset naming is typically done at the start. For options to rename later, refer to [dataset management](/v1/docs/dataset-management-1).

Yes, there is a real-time preview that visualizes the scanning density, image capture locations and control point locations of the areas scanned.
