# Calibrating the IMU of the Device

When your NavVis CLX powers on, the device automatically runs a background calibration to set the IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) for accurate scanning. This step is essential for stable, precise scans, and the result stays valid as long as the device remains powered on.

This is a real-time calibration that happens every time the device turns on. Do not confuse this with the device calibration performed at NavVis HQ during service and maintenance. That larger device calibration aligns all sensors for maximum scan accuracy. See [device calibration](https://knowledge.navvis.com/docs/maintenance-service) for more details.

> Do not move the device during this procedure. Movement can interfere with the calibration results and reduce the device's accuracy.

If this automatic calibration fails, the device displays a screen prompting you to run a manual calibration. Follow these steps to complete it:

1. Place the device on a stable, level surface.
2. Tap **Calibrate**.
3. Wait for the progress bar to reach 100%. This takes about 20 seconds. To cancel the calibration, tap **Cancel**.
4. The screen shows a message confirming that the calibration succeeded.

If the IMU calibration fails, restart the device. If it fails again, check that the battery and micro-SD card are correctly inserted. If it still fails, contact [support@navvis.com](mailto:support@navvis.com).
